Bovey Castle, North Bovey
As guests of Moorland View, you have free membership of this country club, along with 20% off activities and spa treatments. You'll find the membership card in the cottage - just take it along with you. When you arrive, ask for help at reception. We recommend you book spa treatments, meals, the tennis courts and golf in advance. The castle has three dining rooms serving everything from cream teas and quick lunches to haute cuisine. Be sure to show the membership card when paying for your 20% discount, and check your bill - sometimes the discount gets forgotten. Horseriding
The moors offer varied and dramatic riding terrain, from open stretches of turf for galloping to banks and ditches to jump, and there's hardly any traffic. Babeny stables do two-hour hacks for £30 (01364 631 296, www.babenystables.co.uk). Also try Skaigh Stables (01837 840429, www.skaighstables.co.uk). Emphasize that you'd like to go with people of a similar standard to you.

Ring of Bells, North Bovey
A 13th century coaching inn just a 20-second stroll from the cottage, serving real ales and great, local food. The best seats for dinner are by the fire in the dining room. Book ahead on weekends, even for lunch. 01674 440 375, www.ringofbells.net.

White Horse, Moretonhampstead
