EVENTS IN DEVON, 2010
Quadrantids meteor shower (3rd and 4th January)
Up to 40 meteors per hour at their peak, the shooting stars are clearly visible on the high moor.
Game shooting season (ends 31st January)
Vegetarians, look away now. The game shooting season is underway in Devon - a great opportunity to hunt your own dinner. Dartmoor Shooting has one-day tutored shoots, with a lesson on how to prepare your catch for the oven. Clay pigeon shooting also available.
Moretonhampstead Festival of Food, Beer and Arts (6th March)
Juicy sausages, stinky cheeses and delicious cakes - Devon's finest farm shops come to your doorstep. If you like the knarly oak chopping board in the cottage, you can buy your own here.
Spring flowers (April- May)
See carpets of bluebells and daffodils in their full glory at Steps Bridge.
Exeter Festival of Food and Drink (9th-11th April)
Gulp, gurgle and spit your way around the grounds of Exeter Castle, where there are wine and beer tastings, and cookery masterclasses.
Devon County Show (20th-22nd May)
House-sized heifers, daring dogs, shaggy sheep - and lots of poo.
English Wine Week (22nd-29th May)
Devon's extensive vineyard trial makes it the best place to be for English Wine Week.
Blackawton Worm Charming Festiva (May - date to be confirmed)
Coax as many worms out of the ground as you can - without touching them. One of England's most eccentric events.
Butterfly season begins (May - early June)
Go in search of two of Britain's most elegant but elusive fritillary butterflies, whose paths meet in Hembury Woods until early June.
Devon Guild of Craftsman's Contemporary Craft Fair (11th-13th June)
Buy contemporary art pieces direct from more than 160 designer-makers in an idyllic setting.
Gold Coast Oceanfest (11th-13th June)
Further afield in Croyde, this festival is all things sun, sand and surfing.
Exeter Summer Festival (25th June-July 11th)
Has 40 events with leaders from the world of dance, theatre, comedy, literature and film until July 11th.
Chagstock (17th-18th July)

North Bovey village fete (19th July)
A traditional village fete, complete with sheep shearing competitions and ferret racing.
Port Eliot Literary Fest, Cornwall (23rd-25th July)
Held in a stately home near Saltash, the Port Lit Festival draws big names like Monica Ali, Zadie Smith and Hanif Kureishi.
Manaton village fete (26th July)
Our neighbouring village's fete, where our rival tug-of-war teams go head-to-head.
Bread Weighing and Ale Tasting Ceremony, Ashburton (August date to be confirmed)
Take part in historical pageantry at one of Devon's oldest festivals.
Beautiful Days music concer (August date to be confirmed)
Started by The Levellers, this is a non-corporate festival in Escot Park on land laid out by Capability Brown. Acts in 2009 included The Pogues, Lamb and The Wonder Stuff.
Dartmoor Folk Festival (August date to be confirmed)
A traditional folk festival, with ceilidh, Dartmoor stepdance and broomdance championships in pubs and halls in South Zeal.
Perseids meteor shower (12th and 13th August)
One of the best meteor showers, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak.
Totnes Orange Races (18th August)
The Pamplona bull run - just with oranges.
Dartmouth Regatta (28th August)
Take to the seas for one of the biggest events in the UK sporting calender.
Open Studios (4th-19th August)
Over 100 studios and galleries across Devon open their doors to visitors, while barns and churches become galleries too. Highlights include Heather Jansch - Devon's answer to Damen Hirst - in Olchard.

Widecombe Fair (14th September)
A traditional agricultural show with maypole dancing and bale tossing, made famous by the folk song.
Tavistock Food Festival (11th and 12th September)
The county's best produce, in the county's best market town.
The Two Moors Festival (October date to be confirmed)
The hills are alive ... classical music is played in churches across Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Surf's up (October)
With the sea at its warmest, October is the best month to go surfing. Lessons start at £35 per hour, including equipment.
Annual Pony Drift (October)
Wild Dartmoor ponies are rounded up from the moor to be vetted. You can take a hack across the moor, stopping at a country pub for lunch, with Babeny Stables.
Tavistock Goose Fair (October date to be confirmed)
Tavistock's annual Goose Fair has attracted traders since the 12th century, but the two-day event is no longer restricted to poultry shifters: today, stallholders from all over the country descend to sell and to entertain.
Dartmouth Food Festival (October date to be confirmed)
The historic Market Square plays host to a series of cooking demonstrations, a farmers market, wine tastings and much more, showcasing local produce and culinary skills.
See Autumn colours (November)
Dartmoor's ancient woodlands make it one of the best places in the UK to see Autumn colours. The acer glade in The Garden House in Buckland Monachorum, pictured above, has one of the most striking garden displays in the UK, while swathes of purple heather and smudges of acid-yellow gorse carpet Dartmoor.

Flaming Tar Barrels (5th November)
For reasons lost in antiquity, flaming tar barrels are carried wildly through the streets of Ottery St Mary, against a backdrop of a gigantic bonfire crowned by Guy Fawkes.
Christmas and New Year
A lively pub, hearty ales and a ten-second stroll home at the end of the night - celebrating the festive season doesn't get any easier than at the Ring of Bells in our village.
